Clause 216

allows a court to accept guilty pleas in writing in certain circumstances. This clause addresses the inefficiency of requiring oral guilty pleas to be entered to indictments with a large number of charges, particularly in fraud cases. The clause provides that if the accused pleads guilty orally to one or more counts, the court may accept the remaining guilty pleas in writing. This can only happen if both parties consent (the accused's consent must be in writing) and the court considers it appropriate. Please taken in writing under this clause have the same effect as if they had been entered on arraignment.
