Clause 171

requires the DPP, as soon as practicable after an indictment is filed, to serve a copy of the indictment on the accused and, if the DPP does not have notice that the accused is represented by a legal practitioner, the DPP must also serve a prescribed notice containing information about legal representation and legal aid as well as contact details for Victoria Legal Aid. If the indictment is a direct indictment, it must be personally served on the accused in accordance with clause 339.
